Sharing Is Caring – Epilogue – The Rule
Lesley and I have one rule now.
We didn’t have it before him.
That was the problem.
It started with a text on her phone, another one on mine, and the kind of silence that only happens when two best friends realize they have been keeping the exact same secret.
She looked at my screen.
I looked at hers.
Then we looked at each other.
“You have got to be fucking kidding me.”
I wish I could tell you one of us behaved like an adult.
We didn’t.
For the next six weeks, our friendship developed terms and conditions, a man with very few words became the subject of entirely too many conversations, and “sharing is caring” stopped sounding like something they teach children in preschool.
We survived.
Our dignity was less fortunate.
But we did get one very important rule out of it.
Nobody competes over someone neither of us wants to keep.
We just had to learn that one the hard way.
